Install Your Thermostat

Q: I am having difficulty removing my old thermostat.
A: Often times, the thermostat will snap off of the wallplate with moderate pressure. Other times, there might be small screws holding the device in place. If you are unable to pull it off, please refer to your thermostat manufacturer's website or manual for removal instructions. NOTE: Do not place your old thermostat in the trash if it contains mercury in a sealed tube. Contact the Thermostat Recycling Corporation at http://www.thermostat-recycle.org/ or 1-800-238-8192 for information on how and where to properly and safely dispose of your old thermostat.
Q: I have additional wires in my wall that were not connected to my old thermostat. Do I need them to install my new thermostat?
A: An extra unused wire in the wall can be used as the C wire for your new thermostat. The extra wire will also need to be connected to the C (common) terminal at the heating and cooling system. This will provide power to your new thermostat. Please refer to the video section for more information.
Q: What tools or materials are necessary for the installation of my new thermostat?
A: In most cases, the only tools and materials required are a small flat edge screwdriver, #2 phillips screwdriver, your thermostat ID card (located in the box), and your home Wi-Fi Network password.
Q: How do I know if my old thermostat contains mercury?
A: The thermostat will have a glass tube with a silver liquid inside of the tube. Mercury is typically found in older mechanical thermostats like the Honeywell Round T87 and rectangular T8090. NOTE: Do not place your old thermostat in the trash if it contains mercury in a sealed tube. Contact the Thermostat Recycling Corporation at http://www.thermostat-recycle.org/ or 1-800-238-8192 for information on how and where to properly and safely dispose of your old thermostat.
Q: Do the color of the wires correspond to the letters on my new thermostat?
A: There is no code governing wire colors and thermostat connections. The thermostat should be wired by the letters found next to the wire screw terminal block. If you do not know the letter labels, then you can trace the wires back to the air handler/furnace or heat pump/ac unit.  That will allow you to determine the function of each wire at the system and then allow you to attach it to the matching terminal on the thermostat.
Q: What is a C wire?
A: The C wire originates from the heating / cooling system and is necessary to complete a 24 volt power circuit which is required to power some thermostats. "C" stands for common and there is no universal color used to designate this type of wire.
Q: I do not have a C wire on my old thermostat.
A: If you do not have a wire connected to a C terminal or one that is labeled C on your old thermostat, there might be an extra wire that is pushed into the wall or wrapped around the wire bundle coming from the wall. Gently pull on the wire bundle to check whether there are any additional wires. If you do not have any additional wires, please refer to the install section for alternative wiring.
Q: Do I need a C wire to install my new thermostat?
A: Yes - the C wire is necessary because it provides power to your new thermostat.
Q: Why do I have to verify that the heating and cooling system door is firmly secured?
A: Most heating and cooling systems have a built in safety switch, which stops power to the heating and cooling system if the door is not secured.
Q: I am not sure whether my new thermostat is wired correctly.
A: Honeywell offers several resources to assist in the wiring of your new thermostat. These resources include: Installation videos, a User Guide and a Quick Start Guide. If you are still unsure if your new thermostat is wired correctly, please contact Honeywell Customer Care at 1-855-733-5465.
Q: My heating and cooling system has a terminal labeled "COM". What is a COM terminal and what do I do with it?
A: A COM terminal is often used as another name for the C terminal and issued to provide power to your thermostat. COM can also refer to a communication circuit and will not provide power to the thermostat. If you have both a C and COM terminal on your heating and cooling system the thermostat should be wired to the C terminal. Please refer to the Quick Start Guide for more information.
Q: How do I find the password to my router?
A: Check the back or bottom of the router or the operating manual for the password. If you are still unable to find the password contact the router manufacturer.

Connect to Your Wi-Fi Network

Q: I cannot connect to my guest network. What do I need to do?
A: Some wireless routers have advanced features like guest networks. It is recommended that you connect your thermostat to your home network. If you must connect to your guest network, then you will need to contact the router manufacture to assist in unblocking port 443 in the guest network firewall.
Q: Are the MAC ID and MAC CRC case sensitive?
A: No, the MAC ID and MAC CRC are not case sensitive. Upper and lower case characters will work.
Q: Why isn’t my thermostat connecting to my Wi-Fi router even though it is very close to the thermostat?
A: Verify that the password entered for the Wi-Fi router is correct.
Q: Is there a way to extend the signal strength?
A: Most standard routers can be set up to be a repeater. You can also purchase and install a Wi-Fi repeater.
Q: What is the range or distance of the Wi-Fi signal in my thermostat?
A: The thermostat works in typical residential and light commercial applications.  The range or distance of the Wi-Fi signal is determined by your router.

Register Online for Remote Access

Q: What is My Total Connect Comfort?
A: My Total Connect Comfort is a web portal for remote access to Honeywell Wi-Fi thermostats.
Q: I registered for an account on My Total Connect Comfort but the confirmation email never arrived.
A: It may take several minutes for your confirmation email to arrive from My Total Connect Comfort. Check your junk or spam mailbox for the activation email. The activation email will come from mytotalconnectcomfort@alarmnet.com. If you still cannot find the activation email you may need to use an alternate email account to register your thermostat. If you register with an alternate email and are still unable to find the activation email, please call Honeywell's Customer Care at 1-855-733-5465.
Q: What are the MAC ID and MAC CRC for?
A: The MAC ID and MAC CRC are the unique identifiers used for registering your new Wi-Fi thermostat.
Q: Which password do I use on My Total Connect Comfort during the registration process?
A: Please use the password that you created for your My Total Connect Comfort account. If you do not remember the password you created please click on the Forgot Password link on the user sign-in page.
Q: I want to use other devices to access My Total Connect Comfort and control my thermostat remotely (tablet, laptop, or smart phone). Do I need to register each device separately?
A: No - once you complete the registration process, you can access My Total Connect Comfort and control your thermostat from anywhere by visiting myTotalConnectcomfort.com from any device or by downloading the iTunes or Google Play App on your tablet or smart phone.
Q: How do I create an account for my new My Total Connect Comfort System?
A:
  1. Start by clicking the Create an Account icon.
  2. Read and Accept the End User License Agreement.
  3. Enter the required contact information on the Create an Account screen and click Next.
  4. An activation email will be sent to you with a link to complete the activation process.
Q: Where is the MAC ID and MAC CRC located?
A: The MAC ID and MAC CRC is the alphanumeric code displayed on the thermostat display during the registration process. It is also located on the thermostat registration card and on the back of the thermostat . Each thermostat has a unique MAC ID and MAC CRC so that it is unique to your application.
Q: What internet browsers are supported by My Total Connect Comfort?
A: The internet browsers supported by Total Connect Comfort are Internet Explorer 8, Firefox 4, Safari 5, and Chrome 9.
Q: Can I have more than one location registered under my account?
A: Yes, your my Total Connect Comfort account allows you to have multiple locations registered under one account.
Q: I registered on the Total Connect Comfort website but was unable to login using my new account.
A: Check your email and ensure that you received an activation email. Follow the instructions to activate your account and then login to the website.

Voice Activation & Control

Q: I cannot remember what voice control commands are supported on the thermostat.
A: The following voice commands are currently supported:
  1. "Make it Warmer/Cooler" – Changes the temperature setting 1 degree F
  2. "Make it Much Warmer/Cooler" – Changes the temperature setting 4 degrees F
  3. "Make it (1-10) Degrees Warmer/Cooler" – User selects temperature setting change between 1 and 10 degrees F
  4. "I’m Feeling Hot/Cold"- Changes the temperature setting 1 degree F
  5. "What is the Time" – Provides the current time as set on your thermostat
  6. "What is today’s Date" – Provides the current date as set on your thermostat
  7. "What is the Outdoor/Outside Temperature" - Provides the outdoor temperature using your registered zip code on Honeywell Total Connect Comfort
  8. "What is the Indoor/Inside Temperature" – Provides the indoor temperature as recognized directly by your thermostat
  9. "What Can I Say" – Provides the list of available commands
  10. "Never Mind" – Cancels/ends your current voice control session
Q: The thermostat is not responding to my voice commands in any condition.
A: During thermostat device setup, you must say ‘Yes’, to the Device Usage Agreement, to activate the voice control on the thermostat.
Also, please check your Wi-Fi connection as voice control requires Wi-Fi connectivity to function. If your Wi-Fi connection is not activated and you initiate the voice control process, you will receive a verbal response from the thermostat which indicates the voice control capability is not available.

If your thermostat’s voice control capabilities still do not function, please contact Honeywell Customer Service for support at 1-855-733-5465.
Q. The thermostat is not responding to my voice in certain home locations.
A: You should be within a direct line of sight and proximity 5 to 15 feet to the thermostat when instructing the thermostat, via voice control. The distance and proximity of use is dependent upon certain home conditions, like floor plans, thermostat locations, and noise levels.

Voice control may not function correctly when initiating commands from distances above 15 feet, especially when communicating around walls, structures or from other enclosed rooms.

Do not shout your command or speak a command loudly, when standing close to the thermostat.
Q: The thermostat is not responding to my voice during noisy periods in my home.
A: When operating voice control during noisier periods in your residence, you may have to retry commands for correct recognition. Try raising your voice level (however, not shouting) and/or moving closer to the thermostat during noisy conditions is recommended.
Q: The thermostat asks for my voice command when I did not say "Hello Thermostat".
A: The thermostat may infrequently communicate and speak, "Please Say Your Command" when you did not first initiate voice control with "Hello Thermostat". You should ignore the informational audio message that follows. No changes to your temperature settings will happen. You can improve this condition by adjusting the voice control sensitivity index. To adjust the voice sensitivity level, go to Menu>Voice Control and select the Sensitivity option on your touch screen. A slider bar will appear which indicates your current sensitivity setting. You should adjust your sensitivity level to a lower number to help reduce false triggers and a higher number to help improve the recognition of the trigger command (Hello Thermostat). You may modify the voice control sensitivity multiple times to optimize your voice experience.
Q: The thermostat does not recognize "Hello Thermostat", and does not provide an audible response, "Please Say a Command".
A: Retry "Hello Thermostat" voice trigger phrase with a brief pause between words. You may want to move closer to thermostat and/or raise your voice slightly when retrying the voice trigger.

Please ensure your thermostat is connected to your Wi-Fi network for voice control operation.

To improve voice trigger phrase recognition, you should adjust the voice sensitivity level. Go to Menu>Voice Control and select the Sensitivity option on your touch screen. A slider bar will appear which indicates your current sensitivity setting. You should adjust your sensitivity level to a higher number to help improve the recognition of the trigger command (Hello Thermostat). You may modify the voice control sensitivity multiple times to optimize your voice experience.
Q: The thermostat is not recognizing my voice commands to adjust the temperature setting.

A: No, the voice activated control functionality will not operate without Wi-Fi. A notification of non-connectivity to the voice server will be provided in an audio response message. You must also remain connected to Wi-Fi to receive automatic software product updates for voice control.

If your received Wi-Fi signal strength is low on your thermostat, you may want to consider installing a Wi-Fi range extender for your home. Honeywell has tested with, and recommends this model (Linksys N300 Wi-Fi Range Extender).

A: If your Total Connect Comfort application has alerted you of communication lost to your thermostat, you should check to see if your Wi-Fi status is connected on the thermostat. A: If you have a "Clear" 4G brand of Wi-Fi router, you may experience difficulty in registering this thermostat during the Wi-Fi registration process. You may try these procedures for Clear 4G routers if you cannot immediately connect via Wi-Fi:
  • Try re-enrolling the thermostat from the Wi-Fi setup menu
  • Try power-cycling the thermostat and re-enrolling from the Wi-Fi setup menu
  • Attach an external wireless access point to the Clear 4G router and re-enroll
